By Emily Honig

Becoming Modern Man: Rethinking Gender and Identity in Maoist China is a groundbreaking work that examines the complex and often contradictory ways in which gender and identity were shaped during the Maoist era. Drawing on a wealth of archival research and interviews, the book offers a nuanced and insightful analysis of the ways in which the Chinese Communist Party attempted to reshape gender roles and identities, and the ways in which individuals and groups resisted or negotiated these attempts.

Honig argues that the Maoist era was a period of both continuity and change in terms of gender and identity. On the one hand, the CCP continued to uphold many traditional Confucian values, such as the importance of male dominance and female submissiveness. On the other hand, the CCP also introduced a number of new ideas about gender and identity, such as the importance of women's liberation and the equality of the sexes.

As a result of these conflicting forces, the Maoist era was a time of great flux and uncertainty for gender and identity. Individuals and groups were constantly negotiating and renegotiating their own understandings of what it meant to be a man or a woman. This process was often difficult and painful, but it also led to new and innovative ways of thinking about gender and identity.

Becoming Modern Man is a major contribution to the study of gender and identity in China. It provides a rich and nuanced account of the ways in which gender and identity were shaped during the Maoist era, and it offers new insights into the ways in which individuals and groups negotiated the challenges and opportunities of this period.
