Redpath was born in Buckie, Scotland, in 1937. She grew up in a musical family, and she began singing at a young age. She developed a repertoire of traditional Scottish songs, and she quickly became known for her beautiful voice and her warm, engaging stage presence.

In 1967, Redpath released her debut album, "The Songs of Jean Redpath." The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to launch her international career. Redpath went on to release over 20 albums, and she toured extensively throughout the world.

In addition to her singing career, Redpath was also a gifted songwriter. She wrote over 100 songs, including the popular ballads "The Bonnie Lass o' Fyvie" and "The Rowan Tree."

She also helped to establish the Traditional Music Forum, which is a national organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Scottish folk music.

In 2013, Redpath was awarded the MBE for her services to Scottish folk music. She was also inducted into the Scottish Music Hall of Fame.
