The Early Years
Bad Brains were formed in 1977 by vocalist H.R., guitarist Dr. Know, bassist Darryl Jenifer, and drummer Earl Hudson. The band's early years were marked by poverty and violence. H.R. was often homeless and slept on the streets of Washington, D.C. Dr. Know was arrested for drug possession and spent time in jail. Despite these challenges, Bad Brains persevered and began to build a following.
In 1980, Bad Brains released their debut album, Bad Brains. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish the band as one of the leading lights of the hardcore punk movement. Bad Brains followed up their debut with a string of classic albums, including Rock for Light (1983),I Against I (1986),and Quickness (1989).
The Rise to Fame
Bad Brains' popularity grew throughout the 1980s. The band toured extensively and played to sold-out crowds. Bad Brains also appeared on television and in films. In 1987, the band was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance.
Despite their success, Bad Brains faced a number of challenges. H.R. struggled with drug addiction and mental illness. Dr. Know was also arrested for drug possession. In 1994, the band was involved in a car accident that killed their manager.
The Enduring Legacy
Despite these challenges, Bad Brains have continued to make music and tour. The band has released several albums in recent years, including Build a Nation (2007),Into the Future (2012),and Fearless (2015). Bad Brains have also been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
