Early Life and Career

Randy Weston was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1926. He began playing the piano at an early age, and by the time he was a teenager, he was playing professionally in local clubs.

In the early 1950s, Weston began to make a name for himself as a jazz pianist. He recorded several albums for the Blue Note label, and he played with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Art Blakey, Max Roach, and John Coltrane.

Civil Rights Activism

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Weston became increasingly involved in the civil rights movement. He performed at rallies and fundraisers, and he used his music to speak out against racism and segregation.

In 1960, Weston released the album "Uhuru Afrika," which was a tribute to the African liberation movement. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to raise awareness of the civil rights struggle.

Later Career

Weston continued to record and perform throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He toured extensively in Africa, Europe, and Asia, and he collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie, Miriam Makeba, and Abbey Lincoln.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Weston focused on composing and arranging. He wrote several suites for large ensemble, and he also wrote music for film and television.

Legacy

Randy Weston is one of the most influential jazz pianists of our time. His music has been praised for its beauty, its power, and its originality.

Weston's autobiography is a valuable addition to the literature on jazz and American history. It is a moving and inspiring account of a life dedicated to music and social justice.
